The man conducted a "sweet game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to ingest treats "as fast as possible".
She told the court Ruben had engaged in this activity with the children "over an extended period", and minors had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.
She said the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in recently.
The legal representative stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, for good reason.
"They resolved" to have a look in the individual's items."

She said the defendant continued to engage in the "treat game" with six boys that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the next day.
"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that time," she stated further.
The oversight body, the police conduct office, had stated that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.
Mrs Prior explained the youngsters were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the stepson contacted the law enforcement a second time.
